Studio Overview

Studying with the major professor
Here at Ithaca undergraduates will study either with Professor Coletti or myself, but both professors are available to help. Graduate students get to study with each professor of one year. Being able to work with two professional trumpet teachers is a unique opportunity we offer here at IC and is something you may not see elsewhere.

Relationship with your studio teacher
The relationship you have with your major professor is very important. This is the person who you will study with for two to four years, and who will also be your mentor. Having a teacher who truly cares about you and is connected in the music world is extremely important for your success. If you are interested in reading my teaching philosophy, it can be found at here. I encourage and assist my students to record audition tapes for summer music festivals, compete in the National Trumpet Competition, and audition for International Trumpet Guild Conference scholarships and competition. I also actively serve as adjudicators for the National Trumpet Competition and am a coordinator for the International Trumpet Guild conference.

Trumpet Studio Environment
I personally feel the studio environment is one of the most important things to consider. You only see your major professor in a formal sense for a lesson and studio class. That is twice a week, but you see your peers every day. You will learn a lot from your peers and having individuals that are supportive, encouraging, and friendly will make all the difference in the world. Members of the studio are dedicated to achieving excellence as musicians and educators while being held to the highest standards. The studio at IC prides itself in the fact that we are able to provide every student with personalized attention and quality guidance. Our studio is the optimal size and environment to learn and network effectively.

How many students are in the studio?
Each year the number of students in the studio changes depending on how many students graduate the year before and how many are accepted. Typically both trumpet professors teach 12-16 students each.

The IC trumpet studio provides opportunities for students to work with and hear recitals by outstanding professionals in the field of music. Recently we have had in residence:
  • Tine Helseth - International Soloist
  • Terry Everson - Principal Trumpet of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project
  • Vincent DiMartino - International Classical and Jazz Soloist
  • The Monozil Brass
  • Canadian Brass
  • Dallas Brass
  • US Navy Brass Quintet

There is a plethora of performance opportunities for trumpet students studying at IC.
Here is a link to all the ensembles we offer such as Brass Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble. https://www.ithaca.edu/music/ensembles/
You can hear clips of our outstanding ensembles here.

In 2019 the Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony traveled to Lincoln Center in New York City to perform Karel Husa's (Professor Emeritus) "Music for Prague" and a world premiere of an Ithaca College commissioned work by Carter Pann in Alice Tully Hall. The IC choir and orchestra will be performing at Lincoln Center in 2021. There is no additional cost for students to travel to these premier performance venues, as transportation, lodging, and per diem are provided by Ithaca College.

Concert Web-streaming
You can attend our concerts virtually through our online web-streaming. The 2019-20 schedule is listed online.  I also invite you to view one of several archived concerts from 2018-19 found here.  Additionally, I suggest watching the Lincoln Center preview concert from last year.

Employment and graduate placement
· Music School Central ranked the college at #3 for its B.M. degree in music education.
· Our students are successful at entering top-level grad schools. In the past four to five years, we have had students enter Master’s Performance programs at schools such as Michigan, Eastman, Boston Conservatory, CCM, Boston College, NEC and Yale.

Graduate vs. undergraduate numbers
The School of Music is 90% undergraduate and 10% graduate.  This creates countless opportunities for underclassmen each year.

Facilities
  • Our facilities are excellent. Students, faculty, and an array of guests perform in the center’s three performance halls: Ford Hall is a 735-seat concert hall ideally suited for symphonic and choral productions; the Hockett Family Recital Hall was especially built to accommodate chamber music ensembles; and the Nabenhauer Recital Room offers a more intimate performance space.
  • Our state-of-the-art facilities also include a music education resource room, smart classrooms, an electroacoustic music studio, and sound recording technology studios. Web streaming technology has recently been added to all major rehearsal and performance halls.
