Active Listening: What, How, Why
Making musical decisions about how to perform a work is critical to make it sound appropriate. One should have plenty of experience studying recordings to make a work by Haydn sound like Haydn, and not like Sousa. Listening to a wide range of musicians and styles builds for us a palette of musical ideas. Much like how a painter selects from a palette of colors when creating a work of art, a musician can select from a variety of musical styles and interpretations when choosing how he or she will perform a piece.
